Norway is known for good quality of raw products, particularly fish. You can find smoked salmon, gravlaks (dried salmon) and trout in almost every restaurant in Norway. You can also enjoy freshly caught fish such as cod, monkfish and halibut. Herring and shellfish are also a popular species of fish – try a bag of fresh shrimp caught by fishermen with a cold beer at the edge of the pier!If you like food from meat, you should not leave before tasting the Norwegian reindeer meat, North American deer, red deer or grouse. You can enjoy all of those meat dishes with cream sauce – even if it is equipped with a glass of red wine, best quality, it will be a very delicious food.
Cheese from goat’s milk, prepared in a special way (brunost) is a Norwegian specialty. Sweet brown cheese and is not widely known outside Norway, but loved by Norwegians of all ages. Dried meat (spekemat) in the form of ham and sausage is a popular food during the summer in Norway. Spekemat usually served with wafer bread, dry and thin (one more peculiarity of Norway), sour cream and scrambled eggs, and always feel good with Norwegian beer and Aquavit.
In recent years, several Norwegian chefs have won international awards for cooking game. They have helped raise the standard of Norwegian restaurants and develop a modern cuisine based on traditional Norwegian food.
